South Korea has one of the highest mobile phone penetration rates in the world. The country has 40 million cell phone subscribers against a population of 48 million. Considering the fact that South Korean people are rich, it is a very lucrative market. Samsung and LG are the two key players in the mobile phone market in the country and they both are local companies. Sony Ericsson is now seriously contemplating on the idea of entering the South Korean market within this year (2007).

Market Watch reported:

“Sony Ericsson is in talks with Korean mobile carriers about installing the WiFi wireless Internet platform on its phones to be launched in Korea,” said a spokesman for SK Telecom Co. (017670.SE), Korea’s leading mobile carrier by subscribers.

Sony Ericsson may launch high-end phones in Korea in the second half of 2007, when an advanced mobile technology known as high-speed downlink packet access, or HSDPA, is commercialized, the spokesman said.

SK Telecom hasn’t yet decided whether to buy mobile phones from Sony Ericsson, he said.

Officials at Sony Ericsson couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

It will be an interesting development in the South Korean market. Local companies like Samsung and LG will face competition from Sony Ericsson. On the other hand, South Korea is a market in which the consumers are always eager to enjoy the latest technology. So, it will be a challenging market for Sony Ericsson too. It will have to present something advanced and special all the time for the consumers.

Best of luck to Sony Ericsson.
